Into The Wild

Christopher McCandless, an American itinerant and my favorite hero, said that university and jobs were a 21st century fads. He added that titles and honors are immaterial and they are not something one should aspire to.
Realists would disagree, calling McCandless a dreamer, who was ignorant or in denial of the real world. Whilst they wouldn’t even begin to fathom the motive of his solo venture to Alaska to live a life of solitude with little food and equipment, Christopher’s ways is a life guide to me.

Christopher McCandless wasn’t your average, bored American teenager. No sir, he was not.
His aspirations probably didn’t involve conquering a video game and beating his friends to the high score, or banging countless number of broads.
He did more than well at school, obtaining an average of ‘A’ grades at university as well as leading his team of cross country racers.

He was destined for greatness and he didn’t even know it… All he knew was that he had to get out of society and feed his hunger which was the big Alaskan dream- to be in a place with no money, little supplies and only nature.

Skeptics debated that Christopher’s actions amounted to suicide. Other’s called him foolish for traveling without a map or agenda, as the results would evidently equal to death.
However, others like me felt differently about McCandless.
He wasn’t just another hiker found dead in what was known to him as the ‘Magic Bus’.

He was a normal human being, just like me and you, who felt the need to get away from what he didn’t agree with, and his determination and strong will took him there.
Christopher McCandless died a happy death.
I believe it must have been happy, knowing you have done everything you set out to do in life.

I'm not sure I can ever so what he did, because it requires bravery and absolutely no self doubt.
But here's to him, for becoming everything he ever wanted to be.
And here's to hoping that one day I will too.
